TTB Historians
As Historians we are learning about how people and events from our past shape our present and future.
‘People without knowledge of their past culture, history and origin, is like a tree without roots’
At TPA, we use different enquiry skills to allow us to delve into the past and learn how the world has changed. We teach History in a way that inspires our children to want to know more about the past. The curriculum includes historical events that have occurred in Britain, from the earliest times to the present day.
The TPA curriculum is centred around two historical concepts:
- Developing the theme of Empire
- Developing the theme of Legacy
As a school we follow a spiral approach for our History curriculum, where each year answers different enquiry questions based on the following concepts; Handling Evidence, Handing Interpretations, Similarity and Differences, Historical Significance, Cause and Consequence and Change and Continuity. As the children progress through the school their knowledge will build on the previous year through disciplinary knowledge. Our lessons are taught in a sequence allowing us to answer the overarching question at the end.
Our history teaching meets the aims of the national curriculum and ensures that all TPA children are able to:
- gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world
- develop a sense of chronology and the passing of time and an ability to place significant events and societies within it
- understand that history is based on evidence and different kinds of historical sources and that there may be a different interpretation of those facts
- ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement
- begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and the relationship between different groups
- draw comparisons and make connections between different time periods and their own lives.
